Our updated report on FinTech in Germany

25.10.2023

FinTech Consult has published an updated edition of its flagship research report on the German FinTech ecosystem. The 2023 update provides a comprehensive analysis of Germany's leading FinTech hubs — Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, and Cologne — and benchmarks their relative strengths across verticals, funding activity, and talent pools.

Key funding data tells the story of a market in transition: from a peak of approximately €6 billion in 2021, German FinTech funding dropped to around €3.8 billion in 2022, and is tracking at approximately €1–1.5 billion for 2023. This correction reflects the broader global venture capital downturn, amplified in Germany by the higher interest rate environment and a reassessment of growth-at-any-cost business models.

The report identifies three structural trends shaping the next phase of the German FinTech market:

  • AI and Generative AI — a new wave of AI-native financial services companies is emerging, attracting disproportionate investor attention despite the broader market caution
  • Digital Assets — Germany's BaFin has issued more crypto custody licenses than almost any other European regulator, positioning Germany as a serious player in regulated digital asset infrastructure
  • Green FinTech — demand for carbon accounting, ESG data, and sustainable finance tools is growing rapidly, driven by corporate reporting mandates and investor pressure

The report is widely used by international FinTechs evaluating Germany as a market entry destination, by investors conducting due diligence on the German startup ecosystem, and by policymakers and financial institutions seeking to understand the competitive dynamics of the sector.
