Full-year 2022 statistics from the German ecosystem

In 2022, only 31 new FinTech were founded, but seven were closed, and 12 were acquired. Compared with 2015 to 2020, when more than 100 new FinTechs entered the market every year, this demonstrates that the ecosystem has matured, not only because of the pandemic.

German FinTech funding almost came to a standstill in Q4 2022. In late summer 2022, funding stood at €3 bn, on the same level as the records of 2021, but slowed down significantly in Q3.

Insurance remains the dominant FinTech vertical in Germany in the number of startups, followed by Payment & Remittance and Blockchain & Digital Assets.

Categories of German FinTechs FY 2022

Banking is still the FinTech vertical with the highest ecosystem valuation of almost €11 bn, followed by Payment & Remittance (€9 bn) and Insurance (€7 bn).

Revenue growth significantly accelerated in 2021 for those FinTechs which have filed their annual reports, both in average (€62 mn) and median (€14 mn) figures.
